PRESS RELEASE

The European Rohingya Council (ERC) condemns in the strongest term the Forced Deportation of seven Rohingya men to Myanmar

Geneva: The European Rohingya Council (ERC) condemns in the strongest term the Forced Deportation of seven Rohingya men to Myanmar by the government of India which constitutes refoulement. This is a brutal act against the most prosecuted ethnic minority of the world; the Rohingya and violates the international law.

The deportation of the frightened Rohingya men took place on October 3, even after the International Independent Fact-finding Mission on Myanmar released a damning report where its investigation has found Myanmar committed Genocide against Rohingya ethnic minority, crimes against humanity and war crimes against Kachin and Shan.

India is a secular country and Muslims have contributed glorious past for which India is well known today. Rohingya ethnic minority of Myanmar while they happen to be Muslims cannot be generalized as a national security threat. This is not a Muslim issue nor a racial one. It is about the whole of humanity being attacked! India as a neighbour to Myanmar cannot pretend to ignore the great threat the Rohingya face under the hands of the military and security forces.

There is a strong pressure to hold the Myanmar military generals accountable for the crimes they have committed against the Rohingya and other ethnic minorities. The forced deportation of these innocent Rohingya men is a clear sign that the Myanmar government with the help of Indian government is desperately trying to stage a fake show in front of the international community that it is sincere in taking back the Rohingya. In this way the Myanmar military which is in charge of the government’s important posts in the security is trying to use the current strategy as a shock absorber to escape accountability.

Instead of deporting, India as a good democratic country should lead to end the Rohingya crisis.

The ERC requests the government of India to sincerely take the deported Rohingya men back.  As and when the world community including India has helped secure a safe and dignified repatriation path for Rohingya back to our homeland Myanmar, we will include all Rohingya currently living in India. If India has run out of humanity, then the ERC requests to hand over the Rohingya case living or detained in India to United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
